- Weekend Recap: Mayor Brandon Johnson Attends Quarter Zip Link Up, Joins Communities Across Chicago To Celebrate Holiday Season
CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson was busy this past weekend, taking proactive measures to protect his city's residents from food insecurity. On Saturday morning, he joined community leaders and volunteers to distribute food packages to West Side residents. Later in the day, he connected with community-focused Chicagoans at City Civics Day and honored local veterans at the Arthur Lockhart Resource Institute's annual Veterans Day event.
The day began with Mayor Johnson signing an executive order at the Aspire Center for Workforce Development in Austin. The order directs additional city resources to support local community organizations, non-profits, food pantries, and faith institutions. This move comes as a response to the ongoing uncertainty around SNAP benefits and upcoming changes to eligibility requirements.
"We know that 600,000 Chicagoans rely on SNAP as a lifeline for those struggling to make ends meet to put food on the table," said Mayor Johnson. "With this executive order, we are taking yet another step to keep our communities informed, to continue to make sure that they have access to food, and ultimately strengthen our protections for everyone."
