The Icla da Silva Foundation helps bone marrow transplant patients like Nour overcome financial hardship and emotional isolation during treatment
CHICAGO - illiNews -- When Nour began feeling breathless and inexplicably bruised, she suspected something was wrong. But nothing could have prepared her for the following words from her doctor: "You need to call your family. You're being hospitalized today." The diagnosis was lymphoblastic leukemia, a rare and aggressive blood cancer.
Nour's life was put on hold as she began a long, painful journey: months of chemotherapy, radiation, and transfusions, all leading up to a bone marrow transplant. Her weight dropped to just 88 pounds.
Despite the physical toll, Nour remained focused on the people who gave her hope, especially her young nieces and nephews. "They call me their sunshine," she said. Her name, Nour, means sunlight, and even in her darkest moments, she tried to be a light for others.

Nour made the effort to appear strong, wearing a wig and her favorite lip liner when visiting with the little ones because she didn't want them to see how sick she truly was.
Adding to her life-threatening burden was the financial strain. Nour had to stop working, and her savings quickly disappeared. She struggled to cover co-pays, transportation, and groceries. "The stress and anxiety from money worries made everything harder."
That's when the Icla da Silva Foundation stepped in, providing emergency financial assistance to ease her burden. Emotional support reminded her she wasn't alone.
"Receiving your grant restored my hope. I felt like I had a community with me," Nour said.

Her story is not unique. Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer. Many face financial barriers that prevent access to treatment.
