~ As Halloween approaches, the Naperville Police Department is offering safety tips to ensure that the holiday is a safe and fun experience for all.
Residents should be aware that there is no City ordinance in Naperville designating official trick-or-treating hours for children, but the Naperville Police Department recommends that young children end trick-or-treating when it begins to get dark and older children end trick-or-treating by 8 p.m.
The Naperville Police Department also encourages residents to report any suspicious or criminal activity immediately by dialing 911. They suggest that young children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult and older kids should trick-or-treat with friends. Parents should create a map of a safe trick-or-treating route in familiar areas and agree on a specific time they should be home as well as pre-set check in times. Additionally, parents should know where registered sex offenders live to avoid placing children in a risky situation.

When it comes to costumes, the Naperville Police Department recommends making sure costumes are flame retardant, short to prevent trips, falls and contact with flames, and not overly scary or require "weapons" of any kind. Kids should wear light colors or put reflective tape on their costumes and carry glow sticks or flashlights to light the way.
When it comes to treats, adults should inspect all candy in a well-lit place and discard any homemade or unwrapped treats before allowing kids to eat them. Only unopened candies and other treats that are in original wrappers should be eaten.
Motorists are also encouraged to exercise extreme caution when driving during popular trick-or-treating hours of 4 to 8 p.m., avoid distractions while driving, be on the alert for excited youngsters darting out into traffic, and not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
By following these safety tips from the Naperville Police Department, residents can ensure that Halloween is an enjoyable experience for all!
