NAPERVILLE, Ill. ~ Naperville, Illinois - As the nation prepares to mark the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the City of Naperville is partnering with Naperville Responds for Veterans to honor the victims and heroes of that tragic day. The annual remembrance event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Cmdr. Dan Shanower Sept. 11 Memorial, located behind the Naperville Municipal Center.

This year's event will feature a special guest speaker, Laura Murphy, who survived the attack at the World Trade Center. Murphy, a retired project manager from Woodridge, will share her firsthand account of escaping from the North Tower after American Airlines Flight 11 struck the building.

The event will also include remarks from Mayor Scott A. Wehrli, Police Chief Jason Arres and Deputy Fire Chief Philip Giannattasio. The Naperville Municipal Band will kick off the evening with music starting at 5:45 p.m.

In case of inclement weather, the remembrance event will be moved indoors to the Municipal Center City Council Chambers.

The annual remembrance not only pays tribute to Naval Cmdr. Dan Shanower, a Naperville native who lost his life in the Pentagon on 9/11, but also honors all those who perished in the terrorist attacks that day. The Naperville memorial was one of the first in the nation to be completed and was dedicated on Sept. 11, 2003.

According to organizers, this event serves as an important opportunity for younger generations to learn about and reflect on this pivotal moment in our country's history. All members of the community are welcome to attend.
