Mayor Brandon Johnson, CDOT, and Lyft Announce New Divvy Stations and Service Improvements Along Chicago's Lakefront

CHICAGO ~ Chicago's lakefront is about to become even more accessible for residents and visitors, thanks to new Divvy stations and other service improvements announced by Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) today. In partnership with the Chicago Park District and Lyft, operator of Chicago's Divvy bikeshare system, these enhancements come as Divvy recorded its busiest month ever in July, with over one million rides in a single month for the first time in its history.

Mayor Johnson expressed his excitement about the new additions, stating that "a Divvy ride is one of the best ways to experience Chicago." He also emphasized the city's commitment to providing diverse and sustainable transportation options for all residents. The new stations will be strategically located in heavily used areas along the lakefront, making it easier for people to access parks, beaches, and other popular destinations.

CDOT Commissioner William Cheaks Jr. also highlighted the benefits of these new stations, stating that they will improve bike availability and strengthen system operations. He added that as more people choose Divvy as their mode of transportation, CDOT will continue investing in a reliable and convenient system for riders.

The areas between Fullerton Parkway and Grand Avenue have seen over 120,000 Divvy trips so far this year, with North Avenue Beach being consistently high in demand for a new station. To support more orderly bike parking in this area, CDOT is implementing designated bike racks and introducing new parking management measures east of DuSable Lake Shore Drive between Fullerton Parkway and Grand Avenue. This will ensure that riders end their trips at designated locations such as Divvy stations or overflow corrals next to them.

Chicago Park District General Superintendent Carlos Ramirez-Rosa expressed his enthusiasm for these improvements, stating that biking along Chicago's lakefront offers breathtaking views of the shoreline, skyline, and parks. He added that working with CDOT on improving access to the 18-mile lakefront trail will enhance the city's exceptional experiences.

In addition to the new stations, CDOT has also installed a new Divvy charging station outside the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park, making it the first one on the South Side. This will support reliable e-bike service for visitors to one of Chicago's newest cultural destinations.

As demand for biking continues to grow, Chicago has been expanding and modernizing Divvy. This includes reduced membership costs for new riders, a price freeze for current members, and continued station improvements. So far in 2026, 124 new Divvy stations have been installed, including 21 charging stations. Additionally, 59 existing stations have been upgraded to accommodate e-bikes, classic bikes, and scooters.

Divvy General Manager Sean Madison shared that the system just set an all-time ridership record with over 47,000 trips in a single day. He also noted that much of this growth is happening along the lakefront, especially with one-way trips to and from the beach. The new stations will add supply where it is needed most and keep the system reliable along Chicago's Front Yard. The new parking measures will also help keep the trail clear as ridership continues to climb.

These investments come at a time when Divvy is breaking records left and right. In addition to July being its busiest month ever, July 11 marked its busiest day ever with over 47,000 trips. As of July 31st, riders had already taken over four million trips in 2026, putting Divvy on track to surpass last year's record of six million trips.
