NAPERVILLE, Ill. ~ Naperville, Illinois - The City of Naperville and the Naperville Public Library have announced their joint initiative, the Embracing Community Book Read, inviting members of the community to participate in a shared reading experience this summer and fall. The selected book for this program is "Community: The Structure of Belonging" by Peter Block, published in 2018 by Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Inc.
In his book, Block emphasizes the importance of every individual being a citizen in a true community, where relationships are valued and focusing on possibilities can bring about transformation. As Block himself puts it, "possibility is a declaration of what we create in the world each time we show up." The author currently resides in Cincinnati and has written several other books.
The Embracing Community Book Read will kick off with a book talk featuring Peter Block himself via Zoom on Wednesday, July 31 at 7 p.m. Interested participants can attend the event either in person at Council Chambers in the Naperville Municipal Center or remotely through Zoom. While the Book Read is free and open to all, registration is required. Details on how to register can be found on the City's website at naperville.il.us/embrace-community. For those attending online, the Zoom link will be provided via email prior to the event.

Participants are encouraged to read the book between August 1 and October 5. Copies of "Community: The Structure of Belonging" are available for purchase at various book retailers as well as through the Naperville Public Library system in audio and e-book formats. In October, volunteer-led small group discussions will be held at different times and locations for readers to engage in meaningful conversations about the book. These discussions will culminate with a final Inclusive Community Conversation on November 7 where readers can share their thoughts with the wider community. More information regarding specific times and locations for these events will be shared with registrants later in the summer, as well as on the City's website and other communication channels.
Geneace Williams, the City of Naperville's Manager of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, believes that the Embracing Community Book Read is a step towards creating an inclusive community that values diversity. She encourages everyone to participate in this community-building activity.
This Book Read is part of a larger series of inclusive community conversations organized by the City in partnership with other organizations. These conversations aim to foster understanding and inclusion among different generations, cultures, and individuals with diverse experiences. Through storytelling and respectful dialogue, the City hopes to deepen understanding and expand its mission of embracing community to all those who live and work in Naperville.
