From a life behind laboratory walls to a future filled with compassion, Scout's journey symbolizes hope for thousands of animals still awaiting rescue and highlights the importance of advocacy, affordable care, and responsible pet ownership.
CARY, Ill. - illiNews -- Animal Humane Advocacy of McHenry County Welcomes Rescued Ridglan Dog "Scout" Into His New Home
CARY, IL — Out of thousands of applications submitted from across the country, Animal Humane Advocacy of McHenry County and the Barthel family are honored and grateful to have been selected to welcome "Scout" into their home.
Only weeks ago, Scout was among the many dogs rescued from Ridglan Farms Research Facility in Wisconsin. After an eight-hour round trip to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Scout has finally arrived home and is beginning a new chapter far removed from the suffering and uncertainty he once knew.
Like many former research dogs, Scout is slowly learning what life outside confinement looks like — grass beneath his paws, sunlight, compassion, patience, and the comfort of a family environment. Dogs rescued from facilities like Ridglan often require months, and sometimes years, of rehabilitation, socialization, and emotional healing.

Animal Humane Advocacy of McHenry County would like to express deep gratitude to the many organizations, rescuers, foster families, and advocates who made these lifesaving rescues possible, including Big Dog Ranch Rescue, Wayne Pacelle, Wayne Hsiung, Beagle Freedom Project, Dane County Humane Society, NYC Second Chance Rescue, The Center for a Humane Economy, Direct Action Everywhere, and Finding Eden Rescue. A special thank you goes to Savannah, Scout's original foster, whose compassion and dedication helped prepare him for the next stage of his journey.
Scout's story also serves as a reminder that thousands of dogs continue to remain inside breeding and research facilities across the United States. Attention is now turning toward Marshall BioResources in Wayne County, New York, where approximately 20,000 beagles are reportedly housed for research purposes.
Animal Humane Advocacy of McHenry County is a nonprofit organization dedicated to animal welfare, affordable veterinary care, rescue advocacy, and community outreach. The organization works to assist vulnerable pet owners through affordable vaccination clinics, spay and neuter initiatives, pet food assistance programs, rescue support efforts, and public education surrounding animal welfare issues.
