CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has announced the appointment of LaKenya White as the acting interim Chief Administrator for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA). White, a Chicago native, brings 25 years of experience in investigative and police accountability roles to her new position.

In a statement, Mayor Johnson praised White's dedication and experience, stating that she is an exceptional choice for the role. He also highlighted her ability to respond decisively under pressure and her institutional knowledge, which will be crucial in ensuring a smooth transition.

White has been with COPA since its establishment in 2017, starting as a Major Case Specialist and most recently serving as the Director of Investigations for Intake. She expressed her honor at being appointed as Interim Chief Administrator and her commitment to building on the agency's successful work.

COPA is recognized as a national leader in police oversight, and White's goal is to further strengthen their positive strides while fostering stronger connections between the community and the Chicago Police Department.

White's career in police oversight began in 2000 when she joined the Office of Professional Standards as an Intake Aide. She then became an Investigator at the newly established Independent Police Review Authority in 2007, where she specialized in handling officer-involved shootings. In 2017, she joined COPA as a Major Case Specialist and was later promoted to Supervising Investigator before becoming Director of Investigations in 2023.

With a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Chicago State University and a master's degree in business administration from St. Xavier University with a focus on fraudulent investigations, White brings both academic knowledge and practical experience to her new role.

The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability (CCPSA) is currently leading a nationwide search for the next permanent COPA Chief Administrator. In the meantime, White will serve as acting interim Chief Administrator, continuing COPA's important work towards fair, timely, and effective police accountability in Chicago.
