CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with representatives from the Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS), Chicago Public Schools (CPS), and Laborers' Local 1001, gathered today to celebrate the graduation of 70 CPS students from the newly launched DSS Laborers Trainee Program.
In his remarks, Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for young people to gain meaningful employment. He stated that this is a key focus of his administration's commitment to creating an environment where every young Chicagoan can grow and thrive. The mayor also expressed his honor in getting to know and congratulate the graduates who will soon be joining the DSS team.
The program begins with a two-week training period at the Laborers' Training Center in the Austin neighborhood. Upon completion, trainees will work with DSS to gain on-the-job skills and experience. This creates a pathway for potential employment with the city if participants choose to bid on available opportunities at the end of the program.
